Singapore Xtreme Competition 2009

Singapore Xtreme Championship 2009 is a sporting event held in Singapore from August 29 to 30 August 2009. The event was held at Xtreme Skatepark @ East Coast over the two days from 10am to 5pm. The event features three competitions in extreme sports, namely BMX Freestyle Park, Aggressive Inline Park and Skateboard Park. Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was Guest-of-Honour at the official launch of Xtreme Skatepark @ East Coast on Saturday, 29 August accompanied by Mr Mah Bow Tan, Minister for National Development, and Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports. A total of seventy five competitors from seven countries around Asia including Thailand, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia participated in the event with a total of more than five thousand people attending the event over two days. Demographics of visitors There are no specific sports tourists in general. However, there are these three international athletes with different abilities coming from different countries who attended this event. They are Takeshi Yasutoko who is a professional in aggressive in-line skating, Tim Wood who is a BMX Freestyle pro and Trevor Ward who specializes in skateboarding. These three pro athletes have different reasons for attending this event. However, some motivations are similar and these are in terms of their passion towards their sports and to give encouragement and support for the amateurs to never give up and to keep following their dreams. Most participants are teenagers who are still healthy and able-bodied to take part in this high risk sport. Prizes The champions of each category of the competition went home with a cash prize of $3,000 each and an automatic spot at the KIA X Games Asia 2010, organised by ESPN Star Sports. Location The Xtreme Skatepark @ East Coast is one out of two international standard parks in Asia and occupies an area of 1.4 hectares. It comprises a combo bowl, a vertical bowl and a streetcourse and is catered to both beginners and professionals. The streetcourse is made up of various obstacles such as a euro-gap, ramps of various heights and many grind boxes. BMX Freestyle Park The BMX Freestyle Park competition was judged by Adam Banton, from the United States. The qualifiers for this competition were held from 3pm to 5pm on 29 August at the streetcourse with the finals scheduled to be held at 5pm to 6pm the next day. However, the finals of this competition did not go on due to heavy rain. The event organiser eventually cancelled the finals and used the qualifiers as the final results. Results are as follows: 1. Rungrueang Phamee from Thailand 2. Chokchai Wanisakul from Thailand 3. Zafrin Shah B. anak babi from Malaysia Aggressive Inline Park The Aggressive Inline Park competition was judged by Mike Opalek from the United States. The qualifiers for this competition were held from 9am to 11am on 29 August at the streetcourse with the finals carried out from 11am to 12pm the next day. Results are as follows: 1. Fazuly bin Sudarmaji from Singapore 2. Sharizal Amatt from Singapore 3. Norachai Boonnim from Thailand Skateboard Park The Skateboard Park competition was judged Chalie Wilkins, from Framingham, Massachusetts. The qualifiers for this competition were held from 12pm to 2pm on 29 August at the Skate Park with the finals carried out from 2pm to 3pm the following day. Results are as follows: 1. Juraimi Bin Jumali from Singapore 2. Weerayut Eksirasuwan Thailand 3. Ahmad Fadzil Bin Musa Malaysia Impact It was a platform to showcase extreme sports talents in Singapore, giving Singaporean youth a chance to express themselves. By the end of this event itself, it has also created exposure for the local scene in the world of extreme sports and dance. Trends There has been an increase in the number of youths in Singapore who are interested in such competitions, both as competition grounds and as supporters. More competitors locally and around the region do recognise meets / competitions such as the Singapore Xtreme Challenge. Other activities Other activities include demo performances from international stars such as Tim Wood (BMX Freestyle), Takeshi Yasukoto (Aggressive In-Line) and Trevor Ward (Skateboard). There were other non-extreme sports activities such as the "NParks Beach Volleyball Tournament" which was held at the beach area in front of the skate park as well as a dance competition which featured top b-boy and dance crews in Singapore with participants standing a chance to win over $2,000 in cash and prizes to be won, both of which were held on August 2009. A dance party was also held featuring DJ Shawn Livewire.
