SIM Reservoir is a visualization tool for post processing of petroleum reservoir simulation models, as part of the seismic to simulation workflow. It currently supports the ECLIPSE, POWERS and PSIM reservoir simulators. SIM Reservoir was originally developed for Saudi Aramco in order to enable reservoir engineers to visualize of their full field reservoir simulation runs. It has since been extended and is now offered as a licensed product by Kongsberg SIM. SIM Reservoir allows fast loading and fully interactive visualization of high resolution reservoir simulation models containing hundreds of millions of cells. This, combined with its ability to scale to the available hardware, means that SIM Reservoir makes it feasible to work efficiently with large and complex data sets, which has ben a central design goal. A central technology that enables visualiation of large data sets in SIM Reservoir is the use of the quad tree data structure. SIM Reservoir comes with a separate Parallelized converter that reads the output from the reservoir simulator and stores it in a format that, due to the use of the quad tree data structure, can be read very quickly from disk.
