Silvio Pollio is an Italian-Canadian writer/producer/director from Vancouver, B.C. and creator the film "Guido Superstar: The Rise of Guido", starring himself, John Cassini, Nicholas Lea, Terry Chen, Michael Eklund The film screened at the Vancouver International Film Festival Thursday, Oct. 7 at 9:45 p.m. and Friday, Oct. 8, at 10:45 a.m., both at the Empire Granville 7 in downtown Vancouver, BC. Awards In 2003 at the now defunct Queens International Film Festival, "How It All Went Down" directed, produced, and starring Silvio Pollio won the Queens Spirit Award for Best Picture. Criminal Convictions In 2002, Pollio was convicted of assaulting a woman during an incident on Vancouver's Commercial Drive. He was found guilty of backing his car into city politician Roslyn Cassells, a former park commissioner, then kicking her in the ribs. According to the Canada Revenue Agency, in 1997, Pollio began submitting claims for tax refunds for goods and services that he and his private companies purchased to make his film. Canada Revenue Agency auditor Helen Lee began asking questions in June 1999. Pollio "provided Lee with fraudulent invoices to justify the GST claims." By November 2001, he had fraudulently claimed $203,902, which would have required "an expenditure of almost $3 million". Of the amount claimed, he actually received $195,080 from the federal government, none of which has been recovered as of the article by the Vancouver Sun on February 17, 2007 Pollio was convicted of Taxation Fraud on February 16, 2007 in BC Provincial Court in Canada. Pollio received a $101,951 fine, and the Canada Revenue Agency declared that Pollio must also pay back the $195,080 GST refund he received. His 22-month conditional sentence also required him to live with his parents, seek full-time employment, and complete 150 hours of community service.
