Shervin Assari

Shervin Assari M.D. M.P.H. (born April 4, 1976), is the only non-U.S. citizen and also the only non-PhD researcher who has been awarded Cornely Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, by University of Michigan School of Public Health, Ann Arbor. He is a faculty at the Department of Psychiatry, with joint appointments at Depression Center, Watkins Research Lab, and Center for Research on Ethnicity, Culture, and Health (CRECH), University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He has published over 100 peer review manuscripts in Pubmed, and is ranked #3 among more than 31,000 peer reviewers. He is a member of ten editorial boards of peer review journals.
Training
Shervin Assari is trained in Medicine and Public Health. He completed his medical training as a primary care physician in Shahrekord University of Medical Sciences, Iran, from 1994 to 2002. In 2011, he received a master of public health degree from University of Michigan School of Public Health, Ann Arbor. In 2013 and 2014, he completed a two-year Cornely Postdoctoral Fellowship Training in health equity and disparity, supported by the Center for Research on Ethnicity, Culture and Health (CRECH), University of Michigan School of Public Health, Ann Arbor. The Cornely Postdoctoral Program is in its 24th year, and is one of the longest-running health disparity postdoctoral programs housed in a School of Public Health in the United States.
Service
Assari is the Founder of Universal Network for Health Information Dissemination and Exchange (UNHIDE), an international network of public health and clinical researchers who try to promote availability of research-based knowledge required for public health policy and practice. UNHIDE HIV Risk Study is one of the activities of the UNHIDE. He sits on the Board of Directors of the Scientific Association for Public Health in Iran (SAPHIR), where as the Membership Officer he is working on expanding the organization's reach. While he was on the Board of Directors of the U-M Postdoctoral Association (UMPDA), he has contributed to the launching the University's Outstanding Postdoctoral Award. He is also one of the members of Board of Directors of COIPI, the Children of Imprisoned Parents International.
Membership of Academic Organizations
He is a member of multiple national and international professional and academic organizations. He holds the Fellow status of the Scientific Association for Public Health in Iran (SAPHIR). Dr. Assari is also a member of American Psychological Association (APA), Society for Behavioral Medicine (SBM), American Public Health Association (APHA), American Academy of Health Behavior (AAHB), Society for the Scientific Study of Religion (SSSR), International Academy of Sex Research (IASR), and International Research Group on Suicide in Older Adults (IRGSOA). At the American Academy of Health Behavior, he closely works with the Membership Council. Among different academic and professional organizations, Assari is most active with the American College of Epidemiology (ACE), where he sits on the Board of Directors, is the Outgoing Associate Members Director and Chairs the Associate Members Committee. He is also a member of the Award Committee. On the Awards Committee he is one of very few individuals who currently vote for the ACE Awards, including the Lilienfeld Award, one of the most prestigious Epidemiology Awards in United States and globally.
Publication
Assari has published more than 100 peer review manuscripts in international journals in addition to about 50 manuscripts in Iranian journals. According to the Google Scholar, Assari's scholarly work has been cited more than 1,310 times, giving him an h-index of 18. He is the author of four book chapters in the Handbook of Disease Burden and Quality of Life Measures. In 2014, he published 20 manuscripts, most of them appeared in PubMed.
Editorial Experience
Assari has considerable editorial experience. He is the Associate Editor of the Frontiers in Public Health, a Section Editor for Trauma Monthly, and the Editorial Board Member of the following journals; 1) International Journal of Travel Medicine and Global Health, 2) International Journal of Case Reports and Images, 3) Global Journal of Obesity Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome, 4) Galen Medical Journal, 5) Chronic Disease International, and 6) International Journal of Chronic Diseases & Therapy (IJCDT). He has been the Guest Editor of the Hepatitis Research and Treatment and Frontiers in Public Health. He is also the Founding Editor of Developing World Epidemiology.
Assari is a reviewer for more than 30 peer review journals such as Annals of Epidemiology, Chronic Illness, Annals of Health Behavior, American Journal of Health Promotion, American Journal of Public Health, American Journal of Health Behavior, Journal of Immigrants and Minority Health, and Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology.
