Sheila Bell (née Laws) was a pilot and conservationist notable for her vision of returning land to natural habitat that supports wildlife. She gifted her estate to the John Muir Trust in 2004. Training as a secretary in Uganda she worked at East African Airlines to earn money to become a pilot. She formed the airline company Coast Air, flew across Africa and also assisted refugees during Idi Amin's persecution. In 2000 she bought an 140 hectare estate in Glenlude, Scottish Borders where she lived a simple life. Her intent was to return the land to nature by removing commercial forestry and planting native woodlands. Giving the land to the John Muir Trust she retained a lifetime tenancy. thumb On her death in 2010 her funeral was well attended and she was buried within the estate.
