Sheffield University Theatre Company

The Sheffield University Theatre Company (or suTCo) is one of the most successful and prolific student theatre companies in the UK, now staging 9 major productions a year at the University Drama Studio (a 218-seater studio theatre situated in a former church), as well as many other productions in a wide range of venues, from The Raynor Lounge (capacity 100) to the Octagon Centre (Capacity 1000).

Recent successes include Sweet Charity, Beautiful Thing, The Tragical History or Doctor Faustus and theatre two point oh# presents Surveillance.

* Peach and Appleblossom by James Coleman 5th - 8th November 2008
* Coram Boy by Helen Edmunson 19th - 22nd November 2008
* Sweeney Todd by Stephen Sondheim 3rd - 6th December 2008

The company also stages charity events including the biennale 24 Hour Charity Musical and last year, The Sound of Musicals a night of musical songs performed by the company.

suTCo exists as a working committee of the Union of Students at the University of Sheffield, but functions effectively as a theatre company, university society, and committee all rolled in to one. The company is fully run by students, its free to get involved, and is open to all University students in Sheffield.

Having previously been known as SUSU Theatre Group, the company's alumni include Eddie Izzard, Stephen Daldry, Lucy Prebble as well as currently Thomas Szekeres and continues to be one of the leading student theatre companies in the UK.

Awards

suTCo were recently nominated for an Activites Award for "Best Website" by the Sheffield University Students Union.

Also after Beautiful Thing’s run at the National Student Drama Festival 2008, suTCo has been recognised as one of the best independent university drama societies at promoting student theatre, and has been awarded the Judges Award for Promoting Student Theatre along with three other university drama societies, Warwick, Nottingham and York.
