ShareBook

A ShareBook is a computer file, containing text, photos, drawings, and other media (but not executable files (i.e. a video game or word processing program), music (MPG/WMV) files, or video - unless these are embedded within a text-based document), initially distributed for free or at low cost. The initial distributees are free to forward the ShareBook to anyone they wish, provided the ShareBook is maintained intact in all respects. A ShareBook includes a request by the author, publisher, or originating entity for voluntary contributions, in consideration of which the donor may be awarded an expanded edition (called an LBook ), something else (i.e., an Excel file, or being cited as a contributor), or merely goodwill.
The expanded ShareBook edition or LBook, offered with payment as consideration, is generally fully copyrighted material (as indeed, is the ShareBook itself) that, unlike the ShareBook edition, is licensed to an individual or institutional user. The LBook work does not include the right to duplicate and distribute the work, and this right is specifically withdrawn within the LBook licensing agreement.
Created by Barton Hawkins, the ShareBook and LBook concepts are meant to ameliorate the high cost of media distribution of all sorts to the public at large. Those works that by their nature attract small audiences, such as highly specialized works, avante garde material, or that produced by new authors, are well served by the ShareBook and LBook distribution methods.
The ShareBook concept is modeled on that of shareware, created by Bob Wallace.
