Shannon McCann

Shannon McCann (born December 20, 1988 in Queensland, Australia) is an Australian athlete who specialises in the 100 metres hurdles but also races in the 400m hurdles. With over 14 years in the sport, McCann is an athlete to watch over the coming years to the lead up to the 2012 Olympic Games in London. She is one of the top ranked 100m hurdlers in Australia.
McCann holds the Australian Under 23 meet record for the 100 metres hurdles.
Early life
McCann was born in the small country town of Innisfail in North Queensland and moved to Perth, Western Australia when she was four years old. She started running when she was inspired by her sister, Cheryl-Anne McCann who had a very successful junior athletics career with several national medals in the hurdles to her name.
McCann won her first state title at age 8 in the State Cross Country 1500m. McCann has been coached by her father, Ron McCann, since she was 6 and recognised her hurdling ability at age 13 when she won the State U/16 200m hurdles title . Later that year, she competed in her first National Championships where she placed a courageous 6th in the final, after picking up a knee injury in her semi-final. She struggled with her event choices competiting in the Heptathlon for a number of years before finding passion in 100m hurdles. McCann won her first national medal at 16 when she took silver in the 100m hurdles(76 cm) at the Australia All Schools Championships. In 2008 she made her international debut in New Zealand at their National Championships, where she placed 3rd in the 100m hurdles(84 cm). That year she also competed in the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles at the Olympic Test Event in Beijing, China. Under the supervision of her technical coach Jason Moyle and hurdle coach Ron McCann, McCann rose to prominence in 2009, when she won the Australian under-23 100m hurdles(84 cm) and 400m hurdle titles and took the 100m hurdle meet record in a time of 14.16 (+0.4)
