Sexism in China

Sexism in China refers to sexism expressed in Chinese society and culture. Historically, early Chinese culture and communities were based on a matriarchal, female-oriented system, and this legacy remains in the Chinese language character for "family name," which is a combination of the graphs for "woman" and "birth or life." However, later cultural changes created a patrilineal, male-dominated system. Historically-sexist practices in China included foot-binding and female infanticide. Today, China together with Bangladesh are the only two countries which see a higher rate of female suicide than male. |
