SecurDisc

SecurDisc is a hardware and software based security technology jointly developed by Hitachi-LG Data Storage and Nero AG that provides secure data protection and content access control for information recorded on regular CD and DVD media.

SecurDisc™ offers security features via specially modified software, and for some features, via modified hardware in the optical drive as well. Features offered are:

* Password protection of files (but not directory structures nor file names)
* Digital signing of files
* Data redundancy
* Data integrity check
* Copy protection for PDF files

The copy protection (limited to PDF files only) is the only function that requires hardware modification of the optical drive, and as of this writing, only LG optical drives have this option. PDF Documents that are copy protected with SecurDisc can only be read on a SecurDisc optical drive with a special SecurDisc enabled PDF reader running on supported versions of Windows. At this time Mac and Linux users can not read SecurDisc copy protected documents.

The password protection and digital signing are based on AES-128 algorithm, provided by Nero Express and InCD or InCD Reader. Because InCD Reader is required on the reading machine, SecurDisc discs cannot be read on machines with other packet-writing software installed.

For the data redundancy feature no hardware modification is needed. Unused space on the media is filled with data that may enable the special reader to reconstruct a file that otherwise may be unreadable due to damage to parts of the media.
