Scubaprobe

Scubaprobe refers to encased cantilevers, which drastically improve atomic force microscopy in liquids. Regular cantilevers typically suffer from the high viscous damping and added mass of the surrounding water, but encased cantilevers remain dry while submersed in water. This is achieved by a hydrophobic encasement around the probe so that surface tension prevents liquid from entering. Only few microns of the probing sharp tip protrude from the encasement to interact with the sample in liquid. As the encasement is optically transparent our devices are compatible with all existing commercial instruments using optical beam deflection detection.
