The Scottish Rite (known as the Scottish Rite of 1962 when it needs distinguishing from the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite) is a Rite in Freemasonry. It was formed in Belgium in 1962 when some members of the Grand Orient de Belgique of the "Scottish Degrees" (from the 4th to 3rd degrees of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite) rejected the hierarchical structure of the "Supreme Council of Belgium" and decided to recognise the Grande Loge de Belgique as the only "regular" jurisdiction. The masons set up a new jurisdiction of Scottish-Rite upper degrees under the name of the Souverain Collège du Rite écossais pour la Belgique on 9 December 1962, inaugurating it on 24 February the following year. Its functioning is based on the parliamentary model.
