Sawgoek was a logographic writing system that it is suggested was originally used to write the Zhuang language. It was the first Zhuang writing script, and was replaced by sawndip, another logographic script that closer resembles Chinese characters, around the time of the Tang Dynasty. The name "sawgoek" means "original script" in Zhuang. The use of Sawgoek characters is mentioned in the Zhuang epic poem about the creation of the world called "Buluotuo" ().<ref name=laibin/> Within Guangxi, relics dating from the Warring States period to the Han Dynasty have been unearthed, with carved symbols that resemble hieroglyphics.<ref name=laibin/>
