In Australia, Saturday Arvo Football (formerly as Saturday Afternoon Football) was the broadcasting of Australian Football League (AFL) Saturday afternoon matches on free-to-air television. Network Ten first televised Saturday afternoon matches between 2002 and 2011, during which they had the broadcasting rights to the AFL, while the Seven Network held these rights between the 2012 and 2016 AFL seasons. The original Saturday Arvo Football telecast did not air into some states, as the broadcasting contract required the local teams to be televised into their respective states (for example, Saturday afternoon matches involving the Brisbane Lions had to be televised into Queensland). During the 2012-16 period, Seven televised Saturday afternoon matches on delay into the Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth markets, unless there was a live Showdown or in the event that any of the four South Australian or Western Australian teams were playing away from their home states. This was to give Seven News in Melbourne and Adelaide a significant lead-in audience. The Sydney and Brisbane markets, however, received the telecasts live. It was announced in 2015 that Seven would again be the sole free-to-air broadcaster of Australian Football League matches, for the period between 2017 and 2022. Under the deal, Seven will no longer produce the Saturday afternoon match, however, other matches in this timeslot involving interstate teams will continue to be televised into their respective markets.
