She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from George Mason University and is pursuing her doctorate there. Townsend cited the victory of Donald Trump in the United States presidential election, 2016 and the appointment of Betsy DeVos as United States Secretary of Education as reasons why she was running. She said that education was the main issue driving her campaign and that she would like the state to help schools afford more computers, and help students in rural areas have more consistent access to high-speed internet at home.
