Sami Atiya

Sami Atiya (born February, 2, 1964 in Karlsruhe) is a German businessman, who is currently a member of the Group Executive Committee of the Swedish-Swiss company ABB. Since April 2019, he has been President of the Robotics & Discrete Automation business of ABB.
Education
In 1988, Atiya completed his Master's degree in electrical engineering with a focus on robotics and automation at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). In 1993, he received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering with a focus on robotics, sensor technology and artificial intelligence from the University of Wuppertal and the KIT.
In 2002, he earned his MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge. His dissertation about the navigation of mobile robots using imaging sensors was published by the VDI Verlag in Düsseldorf in 1995.
Career
Atiya started his career at Fraunhofer Institute for Information and Data Processing in Karlsruhe in 1988 where he worked as a research manager ob Robotics, Vision an AI and participated in joint projects with the Yale University.
He was employed at Robert Bosch and subsequently, as a Managing Director at Harald Balzer & Partner in Stuttgart until 1997.
Siemens
From 1997 until 2015, Atiya was employed by Siemens where he held various management positions including Senior Vice President of Siemens Medical Solutions USA in Philadelphia between 2005 and 2008, and CEO of the Computer Tomography division of Siemens Healthcare in Erlangen from 2008 until 2011. As of 2011, he also worked as CEO of the Mobility and Logistics division in Munich.
ABB Group
In 2016, Atiya became a Member of the Group Executive Committee at ABB and President of the Discrete Automation and Motion. Since April 2019 he has been President of the Robotics & Discrete Automation business.
During Atiya’s leadership as President, ABB Robotics & Discrete Automation has announced the opening of the Robotics healthcare research hub at the Texas Medical Center (TMC) in Houston, the acquisition of Codian Robotics delta robots for hygiene-sensitive industries as well as a partnership with Covariant for the implementation of AI-based robotics solutions in logistics. Also, ABB has begun construction of its new robotics manufacturing and research facility in Kangqiao, near Shanghai, which is expected to be the most advanced, automated and flexible factory in the robotics industry worldwide. ABB is the only multi-national robotics company with a fully local value chain in China.
Atiya speaks regularly on the future of AI and robotics, for example in his keynote at China’s World Artificial Intelligence Conference.
