Sameh El-Shahat is an artist and a designer of furniture. His works range from the very contemporary to the classically-inspired and are mostly in wood. What links these often very differing styles is a fidelity to the traditional crafts of cabinetmaking and quirky and eccentric style. He sees himself as a contemporary artist who expresses himself through furniture and as such his pieces are often accompanied by a synopsis of the "storyline" behind each piece, or the sources of inspiration behind it. Many of the pieces express strong artistic, cultural and political feelings and views. His works are signed Tavola Rasa, which is the name of his brand. His works are mostly unique pieces that are one-offs, or come in limited edition series. His latest exhibition at the in Dubai in September 2007, was entitled "Design Meets Art". He is also a contemporary painter producing abstract works.
