Saima Akhter is an American data-scientist and technology activist. She has been an advocate for Palestinian worker rights, and raised concerns of censorship on Meta Platforms related to Palestine.
Activism and firing from Meta
Akhter grew up in Chicago, Illinois and attended Northwestern University. Akhter was investigated and fired in 2024 related to her advocacy for Palestinian and worker rights at Meta. In December 2023, Akhter had helped start an internal employee petition to advocate for Palestinian employees and against censorship of Palestinian content on Meta platforms after the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip. After the petition gained hundreds of internal signatures, she was suspended and put on leave for violating internal communications policies. Months later she was fired after an internal investigation found she had downloaded a personal copy of a 47-page report she had put together documenting bias and censorship related to Palestine.
