SAIEE

The South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE), formed in 1909, is a professional association representing the interests of electrical and electronic engineers, technologists and technicians in South Africa and the Southern Africa subcontinent. Its 5000 members are professionally engaged in the full range of engineering activities, including academic research, manufacturing, electronics, telecommunications, measurement and control, mining, and power infrastructural services.
Purpose and function
The South African Institute of Electrical Engineers strives to be a leading and respected learned society of electrical engineers through:
* Promoting electrical science and its applications for the benefit of its members and the Southern African community.
* Close contact with appropriate national and international organizations
* Recognizing achievement by advancement of individual members to higher grades of membership within the Institute and thereby enhancing the status of the profession.
* Being apolitical and nondiscriminatory
The SAIEE is recognised as a professional engineering Voluntary Association by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) in terms of South African legislation, and contributes to the common interests and welfare of the whole engineering fraternity through close co-operation with ECSA.
History
The SAIEE was established in 1909, and celebrated its centenary in 2009. A detailed history of the SAIEE can be found in The First Ten Decades , a book published to commemorate the centenary.
Publications
* SAIEE Africa Research Journal (ARJ) , a peer-reviewed journal, which changed name from Transactions of the SAIEE in 2005
* WATTnow , a monthly magazine for members
Activities
The SAIEE runs a variety of events and courses in electrical and electronic engineering and related fields for its members and the public, and provides accreditation for courses for Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points, as required by ECSA for renewal of professional registration. Its most prestigious annual event is the Bernard Price Memorial Lecture, arranged jointly with the University of the Witwatersrand. It participates actively in public policy debates affecting electrical engineers and the industry, and contributes to the setting of electrical engineering standards. The SAIEE administers and awards a number of bursaries for study in electrical engineering. Through its marketing and outreach activities, it promotes electrical engineering, and encourages young people to enter the profession.
The SAIEE has three sections, which organise activities in specific aspects of electrical engineering: the Power Section, the Electronics & Software Section, and the Historical Section.
Centres
In addition to its Head Office in Johannesburg, Gauteng the SAIEE has the following centres:
* kwaZulu-Natal
* Western Cape
* Eastern Cape
* Southern Cape
* Mpumalanga
* Vaal Triangle
