S. Kandaswami

S. Kandaswami, known by his pen name ‘THURAIVAN’ to the Tamil literary world is a poet and writer in Tamil. He was a broadcaster by profession. He was born on 26 March 1925 and expired on 8 February 1996.
Biography
S. Kandaswami joined All India Radio, Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu in 1946 as an announcer and held various posts such as Drama Producer, Programme Executive, Station Director and retired as the Deputy Director-General in 1983. He has served in Tiruchi, Chennai, New Delhi, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Dibrugarh, Cuttack, Kohima and Kolkata stations of All India Radio. He was an orator in English and Tamil and participated in many symposiums and workshops. He was a widely read person. He had visited Germany and the Philippines representing AIR.
Education
He graduated from MTD Hindu College, Tirunelveli, in mathematics and was awarded Franklin Gell gold medal for standing first in Tamil at the state level in the degree examination. He was well versed in Tamil and English literature. Apart from Tamil and English, he had fluency in Malayalam, Telugu, Oriya and Spanish.
He was instrumental in bringing to lime light many young and deserving talents to the Tamil literary field. Mr.Vaali (poet) the famous Tamil cine lyricist, was one of his proteges.
S. Kandaswami's mentor was Professor A. Srinivasa Raghavan - the educationist, poet and winner of Sahitya Akademi award for the year 1968.
