The official position of the Roman Catholic Church has always been staunchly pro-life and anti-abortion. Participation in an abortion is considered worthy of automatic excommunication. Pope John Paul II described abortion as "murder." Mother Teresa described abortion as being "the greatest crime against peace." There are still many practicing Catholics who identify as pro-choice. Despite the traditional teachings of the church, 64% of Catholics in the United States do not believe that abortion is morally wrong in every case. Catholic women are 29% more likely to have an abortion than Protestant women. In some countries, the Church has funded and/or supported pro-life crisis pregnancy advice organisations such as Cura in Ireland which is headed by Bishop John Fleming.
