Roddy McGristle

Roddy McGristle is a fictional character in the Dungeons & Dragons based Forgotten Realms setting. MCGristle is a human bounty hunter, and has two dogs that he uses to hunt and wields an axe named "Bleeder." Roddy McGristle is first found in "Sojourn" in "The Dark Elf Trilogy" written by R.A. Salvatore.

After the deaths of the Thistledowns by Ulgulu (who was disguised as Drizzt Do'Urden) there was a bounty placed on the head of the drow known as Drizzt (or as one of the children of the Thistledown's (Liam) called him "Drizzit"). Roddy McGristle came from Sundabar to Maldobar to find Drizzt. Eventually Roddy found Drizzt and openly attacked him with Bleeder and his two dogs. During the fight the agile drow killed one of the dogs in defense and Roddy (after accidentally cutting down a tree instead of Drizzt) lost his ear (which left a scar, and caused McGristle to hate Drizzt with a passion).

From that point on Roddy followed any rumors or sightings of this "surface drow" to find him and kill him. McGristle used the deaths of the Thistledowns as an excuse to get men to help him track down the drow, but really all Roddy cared about was to exact revenge against Drizzt for the humiliation of losing his dog and his ear. When Drizzt finally found a somewhat suitable home in Icewind Dale on the rocks of Bruenor's Climb, Roddy wasn't too far behind. McGristle found out that Drizzt was on Bruenor's Mountain and came to Bruenor Battlehammer to ask if he knew where the drow was (or to get soldiers to track down Drizzt). Catti-brie went to warn Drizzt about McGristle (and to ask if Drizzt really killed the Thistledowns) and was soon found by Roddy. After man-handling Catti-brie saying that she must tell him where the drow was or he may have his way with her, Drizzt found them and promptly rescued Catti-brie. Catti-brie left to find Bruenor while Drizzt and Roddy McGristle fought. Guenhwyvar made short work of Roddy's dog and Drizzt defeated McGristle. With Drizzt's scimitars at Roddy's neck, Drizzt battled the decision of leaving him alive or not. McGristle grabbed the scimitar and pulled it toward his own neck yelling "Kill me, drow, or I'll catch ye!" Instead, Drizzt knocked Roddy out, though the act took an emotional toll on the drow.

After McGristle woke, he was discovered by Bruenor, who was angered by the way that Catti-brie had been treated. Bruenor quickly subdued McGristle and told him to leave and never come back. Roddy was later seen leaving Icewind Dale with a his dog (now missing a leg), and Bruenor knew he would never eat dog again.
