McFetridge River Dogs
The McFetridge River Dogs is an Ice Hockey team for the CPD's McFetridge Sports Center. The River Dog was chosen based upon its traits of companionship, focus and attentiveness. On any sports team companionship is a key factor in success. Accomplishing goals is easier as a group rather than as a individual. The River Dogs exemplify companionship through teamwork with one another on the ice. Focus allows the River Dogs to stay on the task at hand. Without focus, the small steps that need to be completed to reach the overall goal will be left unaccomplished. Lastly, the River Dogs are able to compete at such a high level due to the attentiveness to the "little things". Our coaching staff makes sure that the players improve upon their basic skills each day.
Origin of River Dogs
River dogs are not breed specific. However, in general terms, river dogs closely the Mackenzie River Husky. River dogs live and play along rivers and streams all across the land. They are considered adventurous, brave, and work well in packs. With the heaviest concentration in the central region, some believed that a majority of the river dogs stem from the hundreds of thousands of settlers who meet with misfortune as they crossed the plains seeking new lives out west, which left these resourceful creatures behind to find for themselves. Fortunately, the fertile plains were truly abundant with vast supplies of food and shelter along the many rivers, streams, and lakes.
Favorite River Dog Memories
*One of my fondest memories growing up was going to Eagle River with my family. My brothers and I, spent “endless” summer days exploring and pretending we were frontier men seeing the new world.
*One morning as we were crossing a shallow section of a stream, we spotted a marauding pack of river dogs that were on the hunt. They looked like a mix of shepherd and wolf, but took to chasing down geese like well-trained retrievers.
*We froze in our tracks - half terrified and half awe-inspired - Terrified because these wild dogs not only outnumbered us, seemed so much bigger than us, and because our parents had engrained us with the fear of rabies from animal bites. Awe- inspired due to their grace, agility, and teamwork while hunting.
*My brother slipped and fell in the river. The river dogs stopped and turned their gaze upon us. It seemed like minutes passed as the scene unfolded in “slow motion”. But in reality, the time between the splash, the dogs turning towards us, and our screams was a split second. We definitely broke some land speed records as we ran back to our campsite.
*It still provides a great laugh for us years later.
