El Morocco is Montreal's oldest Kosher restaurant, having opened its doors in 1977. It is located at 3450 Drummond, Montreal, in the heart of downtown Montreal. It remains today one of the longest running Kosher establishments in the world. Their menu is typically Jewish Moroccan, although they have been known to serve the same steaks as their sister restaurant, Mortys Steakhouse. In fact, El Morocco is owned by the Abergel family, who also own and run the award winning restaurant steakhouse in Montreal, Mortys. The restaurant's Executive Chef is Esther Abergel. Caterer El Morocco is also one of Montreal's institutions. It's a well known caterer and is called upon to cater extravagant weddings, Bar Mitzvah and other Jewish celebrations. El Morocco also has a very large non-Jewish following who visit it because of its extraordinary food quality and presentation. It remains one of the city's few great Moroccan restaurants. History The restaurant was opened in 1977 in the center of downtown Montreal on Drummond, steps away from the popular Ritz Carlton Montreal hotel. It was originally owned by Gaby and Baruk Chetrit. However, after the sudden death of Baruk, they sold the restaurant to one of their long time employees, Esther Abergel. She has turned the restaurant around and it is once again a popular spot among locals and tourists. See Also Mortys Steakhouse Kosher ----
