Rated People is an online marketplace which connects homeowners with local tradespeople. The service covers the whole of the UK, with over 30 types of tradespeople. It’s free for homeowners to post a job, and up to three tradespeople can provide a quote for the work. Homeowners can then choose a tradesperson for the job - based on reviews, references, and checks on their qualifications. Tradespeople are only reviewed by homeowners who have found them through the site, and are rated on quality, reliability, and value for money. These reviews allow other homeowners to get feedback on local tradespeople, which helps them make a decision on who to hire for jobs around the home. Tradespeople join the site for a monthly or annual cost and then pay a small fee to quote on each job. The cost varies according to the size of the work. They also get access to various discounts and offers that provide extra value, especially when they’re busy and aren’t looking for extra work. Mission The company’s mission is: “Better homes, better work, better lives.” Their aim is to inspire homeowners to create a home they love, by removing the stress of finding quality local tradespeople. For tradespeople, they aim to provide regular work that allows them to grow their business. The reviews system, as well as their profile page, gives them a marketing platform to build their reputation. History The company was founded in 2005 by Andrew Skipwith who decided to start the company after a negative experience with a home renovation project, when a builder walked out after completing only half of the work. In October 2012, Skipwith stepped down as CEO, and Chris Havemann was appointed to replace him. Celia Francis became CEO in April 2015, having held leadership roles in the mobile, internet and telecommunications sectors. In her spare time she mentors early-age start-ups and is a champion for Coder Dojo, Code Club, and Young Rewired State. She also speaks regularly at industry events. In April 2016, Rated People was added to City AM’s Leap 100 list, highlighting the most promising growth companies in the UK. In June 2016 the company underwent a rebrand, unveiling a new logo and website design. Marketing Recent marketing activity has included the Tradesman With A Plan campaign, highlighting the benefits tradespeople get with Rated People membership. Regular TV and radio adverts have been running since September 2016, promoting the company nationwide. Channel 4’s Phil Spencer is the company’s ambassador and works regularly on voiceovers, videos and written content. Funding Rated People is privately funded.
