R.H. Brotherhood

Rowland Henderson Brotherhood served as the seventh mayor of the Village of Elkhorn.
Brotherhood arrived in Elkhorn in 1904 to assume management of the Canadian Bank of Commerce. He was the second and longest serving manager of the bank, holding the position for 23 years. In April 1911 he married Marie Nesta Middleton and the couple constructed a two-storey brick house in the eastern part of the village that is still known as the "Brotherhood House."
He actively contributed to community life as a member of the Masonic Lodge, Community Club, and St. Mark's Anglican Church. Both Brotherhood and his wife enjoyed curling, tennis, and golf and he especially enjoyed duck hunting. Elected mayor in the election of 1918, he served only one year as mayor and had no further involvement with village council.
The bank transferred him to the head office in Toronto in 1929 and he retired in 1936. Brotherhood died 4 August 1952.
