Ramachandra Gangadhar Battu (1927 July 4 - 1994) was a professor, head of the department of pharmacognosy, and principal of the Government Pharmacy College, Bangalore from 1966 to 1986. The Pharmacy College was the first of its kind in Bangalore city under his guidance. Today it is ranked among the top ten pharmacy institutions in the country. R. G. Battu was born and raised in Gokarna to a Havyaka brahmin family. He attended his primary school in Gokarna and high school (1946-47) from the A. H. School, Bankikodla . After completing his B.Sc.(Hons) degree in chemistry from the Karnatak College Dharwar, he attended the Mumbai University Institute of Chemical Technology to earn his B.Sc.,(Tech.) degree. In 1965, Battu received his Ph.D. in Pharmacognosy from the University of Rhode Island, USA . Professor Battu was an able teacher and an administrator. Under his guidance, the government college of pharmacy Bangalore, had its greatest developments in the field during the time India was an underdeveloped country. Ram Battu was author of many research papers in his field of research.
