PSPseq

PSPSeq is a homebrew application written by Ethan Bordeaux for creating music on the Sony PSP handheld game console. Unlike other programs on the PSP for writing music (like PSPRhythm and PSPKick), PSPSeq was first designed for software audio synthesis rather than WAV file sample playback. Therefore, PSPSeq is not properly considered a tracker, though some of the aesthetic design is retro and tracker-like. Additionally, PSPSeq is not a program for making chiptune music as the PSP does not utilize a dedicated and special purpose sound chip (like the one found in the Nintendo Game Boy) and therefore isn't tied to a particular type of sound. The program PSPSeq is most like a simplified version of Fruityloops (now FL Studio), though it also contains some features unavailable in other music creation programs.

The latest version of PSPSeq is version 3.00, released in July of 2008.

PSPSeq Sequencer

Each song in PSPSeq has up to 16 independent tracks and 100 different loops. The total maximum length of a song is 1000 measures; however each measure can be repeated up to 100 times before moving to the next loop. Each loop consists of 1-64 steps and the BPM can be set anywhere from 1.0 BPM up to 999.0 BPM. One unique feature of PSPSeq is that each step has a probabilistic chance of retriggering (set between 0-100%). This is in contrast to other sequencers which make retriggering a track a yes/no operation.

PSPSeq Generators

BAM
Bi-Oscillating Audio Module - a 2-oscillator mutli-waveform synthesizer

BFM
BAM FM - 2-operator FM synthesis with the modulator and carrier each a BAM. routable feedback on carrier and modulator.

FM
Simple FM - simpler 2-operator FM synthesis with the modulator and carrier a single waveform. routable feedback on carrier and modulator.

KS
Karplus-Strong generator - a plucked string/drum simulator based on the popular algorithm

N
White Noise Generator

PSW
Pulse-Width Modifyable Square Wave - square wave synthesizer with programmable pulse-width

ROT
Rotational Synthesizer - rotation of random numbers for periodic audio output

WAV
.WAV file playback

PSPSeq FX

CLP
Clamper - force generator above/below programmed point

DEC
Quantizer & Sample/Hold - amplitude quantization and sample/hold of generator output

MSK
