History
Reality Based Fighting System by Kolotov and Zaichikov (Russian abbreviation PRB VKZ) is a modern name for the system, originally developed in secret for use strictly by the undercover agents of Soviet Military Intelligence. The name of the system when it was developed is unknown. Igor Zaichikov assumes that it was called "techniques of attacks and defenses" or under the folk term "rukopashka" which stands for reality based non-competitive fight without or with weapons.
The system was unknown to the general public until the time of Perestroika in the late 1980’s, when the iron Curtain fell. PRB VKZ differs significantly from both Asian martial arts and other Russian systems, such as Sambo, in its applicative practicality in the real world, comprehensive coverage of conflict situations, and psychological endurance.
Originally, the system was developed by combining best techniques from various traditional ethnic fighting systems of militant peoples of Russia, eastern martial arts, middle ages European arts, and fighting practice of criminal elements. At the same time the system also derived from sport martial arts existed at time although only applied aspect was taken into account.
Partly lost during the Soviet times due to internal competition between the various branches of Soviet fighting systems, PRB VKZ was preserved by master whose real name is unknown, but who was known to Igor Zaichikov (current Grand Master of the system) by last name Kolotov or mid name “Ivanich”.
During WWII, Kolotov - Soviet Military Intelligence operative and instructor, trained other operatives and himself participated in missions behind the Nazi lines. In the 1960’s, Kolotov, by that time retired from the service, was looking for a reliable student to pass the secret system onto. In Igor Zaichikov, a young patriotic Sambo wrestler, Kolotov saw the ideal candidate who would preserve his knowledge and, at the right time, be able to popularize it. For the next fifteen years Igor Zaichikov rigorously studied the PRB VKZ system under Kolotov’s strict guidance.
For years the system was only known in Soviet Special Forces groups, but by the 1990’s it became possible to popularize the system under new name - PRB VKZ and later establish RealMir federation dedicated to spreading the system.
As a system, originally designed to train undercover intelligence officers operating behind enemy lines, PRB VKZ differs in several key ways from most traditional martial arts
* No warming-up: students suppose to always be ready to engage. Consequently, the training sessions start without warm-up exercises, and students work with “cold muscles”, in the process learning to deal with the limitations that working without a warm-up leads to.
* Psychological training: including but not limited to: conscious and unconscious signals before the fight, hiding own true intent, ability to manage the conflict situation and prevent physical confrontation, winner attitude building for hand to hand combat of all types.
* Technical arsenal: with focus on highly effective, simple and exhaustive techniques combining hand and arm strike and leg kicks, locks, ground techniques, throws, weapons attack and defense techniques.
* Ability to use specifics of the surroundings: the use of surrounding objects, obstacles and terrain to own advantage.
* Legal awareness: students are encouraged to resolve the conflict at the pre-physical confrontational stage. If a physical conflict is imminent, students are trained to immediately evaluate the legal circumstances of their actions and subsequently to choose the least legally offensive behavior before, during and after the fight.
* Criminal psychology: empowers students with an understanding of how criminals think, act, and what differentiates a seasoned criminal from regular person.
* Daily exercises to build physical shape and mental endurance such as mediation, dynamic and static sets of physical exercises, etc.
On average, it takes a student three years to complete all the levels of basic training. As a result, a fighter with a comprehensive knowledge of the PRB VKZ system feels comfortable in all conflict situations, and in many ways can prevent them from happening, and feels confident of his or her victory mentally, physically and legally. Shorter custom-designed training course to train specific sets of necessary skills are also available. And for law enforcement agencies specific training focused on a skills and techniques not applicable in civil self-defense situations is also provided.
Currently the system is taught by Igor Zaichikov , Grandmaster of Russian Traditional Martial Arts, a retired Professor of Martial Arts Faculty at the Russian Physical Studies, Sports and Tourism Academy, and his students - Alexander Rabinkov, the founder and general director of RealMir community and Alexey Lestchuk - Chief Instructor of RealMir.
