The Portsmouth Humane Society is one of the longest-serving humane societies in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Portsmouth Humane Society. PHS is dedicated to caring for homeless animals in the community by promoting their adoptions into loving, permanent homes. PHS provides humane education and community outreach programs so that we may begin to decrease the pet overpopulation. Activities Cause for Paws is a program where volunteers register and raise pledges to help fund spaying and neutering animals and receive prizes like t-shirts, gift cards, and the top sellers of $2,500.00 can even receive a Nintendo Wii. The event is usually held in Portsmouth on a weekend in the middle of April. You can download a registration form at Volunteering Volunteers assist our staff in the care and enrichment of our animals. Whether it be socialization, training, bathing, grooming or even an afternoon walk, the time our volunteers spend with our animals is critical to helping them find their forever homes. I cannot express how thankful I am to each of our volunteers for spending what time they can helping both the animals and staff of PHS. Adoption The PHS holds adoptions at other sites outside of the shelter throughout the year. Occasionally they can be found at PetSmart and The Portsmouth Humane Society has a standard adoption process to help owner chooses the animals. See Also
