Since 1981 Plano East Marching Invitational or known as Plano East Marching Competition has been Judging Bands From around the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex Area and around the state
University Interscholastic League Format
High School Ninth And 10th Grade Bands from the Plano Independent School District will be adjudicated by the standard University Interscholastic League format. Three judges will comment in the area of marching competencies, marching style, show format, wind and percussion performance, general musical balance of the ensemble and overall general effect. Bands will receive a final rating which reflects an average of rating from three of the judges. No numerical score will be used to determine these ratings. In addition, the remaining judges will critique the bands in the area of Music Performance, Percussion Performance, Marching Performance, Guard and Drum Majors and assign a numerical score for each of these areas. Those bands that score high enough will receive a Superior Performance Award in each of these captions. These High School Bands will not be in competition with each other, but will compete against a standard of excellence for each area. These High School Bands are not competing in Open Class Division and will not perform in the evening's Finals.
Open Class Competition
Bands In Open Class Competition will be adjudicated by seven judges in the areas of Musicial Performance (Winds And Percussion), Marching Performance, Visual Performance, Color Guard Performance. Each judge will give a numerical score in the respective "caption" or area of adjudication. Each score is then ranked and "weighted" accordingly. Total rank points are then added for each band with the band receiving the lowest total rank points being declared the winner in each class. Class Awards in the Open Class Competition will be Outstanding Winds, Outstanding Percussion, Outstanding Marching, Outstanding General Effect, Outstanding Guard, Outstanding Drum Major, 3rd Place, 2nd Place, and Best in Class.
Rank Points are weighted by the following method Music 50% Marching 36% Visual 8% Percussion 4% Guard 2% The top ten scoring bands, regardless of classification, in Open Class Competition will advance to the evening finalds competition. The scores from the preliminary competition will not be used in the finals competition. All scores in the finals will be ranked and weighted accordingly. Awards in the Finals will be for Places Tenth through Second, Outstanding Musical Performance (Music 1 & 2, Percussion Judge), Outstanding Visual Performance (Marching 1 & 2, Visual judge) and Grand Champion.
