PhPepperShop

PhPepperShop is a commercial and an Open Source Onlineshop system. It can be bought, rented as ASP software or older versions can be downloaded free of charge.
History
In 2001 Shopping cart software was usually programmed from scratch in proprietary projects with costs above $10000.- or realized using an open source project like osCommerce (called the exchange project at that time) which demanded quite some IT-skills. As their diploma thesis at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences Reto Glanzmann and José Fontanil wanted to create a shopping cart software with focus on usability on the customer side and in the shop administration, so that everyone could sell products over the internet for free. The administration of the system should only require a browser and no software installation.
The PhPepperShop software was developed from scratch using the LAMPP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP and Perl), the most commonly used technologies in the internet hosting environment, so that many people could use the software with no additional costs and very low investements. Before even the diploma thesis was finished, the PhPepperShop project was already introduced in German internet magazines like Internet Professionell, which spreaded the information about this new shopping cart software.
Until October 2002, the PhPepperShop Software was developed solely as Open Source under the GNU General Public License. Since the primary target market and focus was the DACH area (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) the business model was changed, so that older versions of the PhPepperShop were licenced under the GPL, while newer versions were sold as commercial software selled by Glarotech GmbH, a company founded by the developers of the PhPepperShop under a proprietary license (PhPepperShop License). However, the source code was still delivered to the merchant and could be altered.
Since the very beginning of the PhPepperShop as a project, it evolved to a larger scale and matured software system (~ 250k code lines), being enhanced steadily and connected to many other software products like Enterprise resource planning-software and E-Payment Providers. Altough the software itself is a standard product, merchants can contact the developers and ask for a project to customize the shopping cart to meet special requirements, which allowed to realize very different solutions.
Version 2.0 (21.12.2005), which brought many new features, the PhPepperShop is available in three editions (Basic, Professional and Enterprise) to better address the different needs of merchants.
In March 2009, the PhPepperShop is used in more than 6000 shops all over Europe.
