Phillip Heggarty (born 1956) is a Welsh murderer. On 23 July 2004, he was convicted of murdering his friend Derek Bennett (born 1962) in a hammer attack in Cardiff in 2003. He had also stolen £3,000 from the victim. Mr Bennett (aged 41) was found dead in a stolen Renault Laguna in Cardiff. His body was so severely mutilated that it had to be identified by dental records. Heggarty was sentenced to life imprisonment and on 23 February 2008 The Times revealed that Heggarty was one of around 50 prisoners who had been issued with whole life tariffs and were unlikely ever to be released from prison.
