PhanArt promotes art in all forms, especially concert Posters, street art, official prints and fan creations, and in the course of such work, benefits The Mockingbird Foundation, which raises funds for music education for children. PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish is a book that documents the band-related artwork created by fans of the rock band Phish. The book contains interviews with artists, fans, and other members of the Phish community, as well as unique fan creations, including posters, shirts, stickers, tattoos, paintings and a variety of other individualistic fan creations. All net proceeds from the sale of the book and subsequent e-book are donated to The Mockingbird Foundation. PhanArt was conceived by Pete Mason shortly after Coventry. A grassroots effort was made to collect examples of fan created art by distributing paper flyers with contact information about the project at concerts in the jamband scene. The Internet was also tapped to spread the word amongst the online fan community, with great help from the websites ExpressoBeans and PhishPosters. The book includes 1634 fan contributions including stickers, posters, shirts, license plates, tattoos, paintings and other unique and creative Phish related items. These contributions are organized into 70 sections cataloging a broad overview of the creative efforts of the Phish community over two decades, including more than 30 essays and interviews with various members of the Phish community at-large. The book includes work from the following artists: Sara Hersh (cover), Scramble Campbell, Ryan Kerrigan, AJ Masthay, Jason Lees, Jamie Huntsman, Kurt Vonnegut, Noah Phence, EMEK, Mike Distante, Isadora Bullock, Drew Suto, Louis Arzonico, Alex Lenz, Erin Cadigan, Andrew Abis, 'Java' John Goldacker, Jim Talbot, TRiPP, The Phellowship, JM Sahr, Dave Huckins, Bo Muller-Moore, Rick Benson, Charlotte Kruse, Jonathan Blake, Phil Urso, Lisa Rose Studio, The Vort, and many others. February 2009 marked the release of PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish and led to a sell out of the first printing (250 copies) in less than three months. A second printing sold out in 2011 and capped off a run of 500 books sold to benefit The Mockingbird Foundation, which benefits music education. PhanArt continues as an ebook, available for Nook, Kindle, iPad and Sony Reader, available in their respective online stores. Ordering info can be found on the PhanArt website. In October 2009, the PhanArt website was revamped as a blog (www.phanart.net) with a focus on raising money for The Mockingbird Foundation by generating donations from fans who have art to sell (shirts, posters, stickers, hats and clothing, etc...) and increasing the visibility of both PhanArt and The Mockingbird Foundation. As of January 2009, PhanArt has raised over $1400 for Mockingbird through the sales of the book PhanArt: The Art of the Fans of Phish, auctions of art and donations made by fans via purchases on PhanArt. The $5000 mark was surpassed in November 2011, marking the value of a full grant for The Mockingbird Foundation. Over $6500 had been raised by early 2012 with donations continuing as a result of the art showcased on the site as well as the sales of the art. Over $18,000 has been raised as of September 2014. PhanArt Poster and Pin Exhibitions have been held since October 2013, highlighting the best art of the PhanArt scene and bringing a wider array of artists to a great number of fans and patrons of the arts. The November 2013 show was held in Atlantic City at Caesar's Palace, a July 2014 show was held at the Congress Plaza Hotel in Chicago, and a Las Vegas show will be held on November 1 at Brooklyn Bowl. A 2014 update to the website updates the mission of PhanArt, "to promote art in all forms, especially Concert Posters, Street Art, Official Prints and Fan Creations, and in the course of such work, to benefit The Mockingbird Foundation, which raises funds for music education for children." PhanArt shifts from being ‘The Art of the Fans of Phish’ to focusing on ‘Music, Art and Community’, reflecting on the roots of the brand - art inspired by music - and reaches out to broader audiences with continued art shows at locations around the country. Phish inspired and official art will continue to be found on the website, but will not be the only art to be found on a daily basis.
