The Peterson-Žižek debate, officially titled "Happiness: Capitalism vs. Marxism", is a debate that took place between professors Jordan Peterson, a capitalist, and Slavoj Žižek, a Marxist, about which philosophy leads to happiness when applied in an economic system. It took place on April 19, 2019, at the Sony Centre in Toronto, Canada. Tickets sold on eBay for over $300 dollars and they were scalped more than Toronto Maple Leafs-Boston Bruins playoff tickets for the same day. The two professors before had argued against happiness as something one should pursue; Peterson had said people should seek meaning through personal responsibility and Žižek had said happiness is pointless and delusional. The Toronto Star noted that in the debate, the two often agreed with each other on the issues of political correctness and identity politics, differing from their supporters.
