Peter Pennell, a Royal New Zealand Air Force navigator on Canberra bombers in World War II, was one of three current servicemen to be featured on New Zealand stamps in 1968. They were the first living people other than royalty to be depicted on New Zealand postage stamps. After the war, Pennell was a display pilot for the NZAF. In 1968, New Zealand Post acceded to a request from the New Zealand Air Force Association and issued a series of stamps to commemorate the Battle of Britain Day. Peter Craig Pennell is featured on the Air Force stamp depicting a Canberra bomber and a Spitfire aircraft.
