Peter Aguirre

Peter Aguirre (c. 1970 - July 17, 1996) was a who was murdered in 1996.
Biography
Before entering law enforcement, Aguirre had planned to become a teacher. Instead, he began to study criminal justice and became a sheriff’s before entering the sheriff's academy. He was married and had one daughter.
Death
On July 17, 1996, Aguirre went to a house in Meiners Oaks, near Ojai, responding to a domestic violence call. A neighbor had called 911 reporting that a woman was being held hostage, and when the deputies arrived, she ran out of the house. Aguirre went inside the house and those outside heard gunfire. Aguirre’s partner went inside next and found Aguirre on the floor with a gunshot wound to the face. The shooter, Michael Raymond Johnson, had shot Aguirre in the forehead at point-blank range, unable to draw his own gun to defend himself.
Johnson was then shot by Aguirre’s partner with a shotgun, wounding him.
Aguirre was taken by helicopter to a hospital where he died despite emergency medical treatment. Johnson was also taken to a hospital and treated for a single gunshot wound in the chest. He recovered and was tried for Aguirre’s murder, being convicted and sentenced to death. As of 2009, he is currently on Death Row at San Quentin. Johnson is the second person to be sentenced to death for the murder of Ventura County deputy sheriff.
