Paxobyte is the first software-based data deduplication storage system for Windows. It is one of the few data deduplication systems for primary storage, serving as general purpose file systems; the other one is ZFS from Sun. It uses inline and fixed-block deduplication techniques to provide realtime deduplication functionality. It supports random access to dedup data and can reclaim freed disk space of deleted files. These features make it possible to serve as a primary storage deduplication engine on general purpose file systems. The interesting Thin provisioning feature allows just-in-time storage allocation. The deduplication and thin-provisioning can probably classify it as a storage virtualization system. So far Paxobyte only works on Windows. See Also * Data deduplication * Backup * Backup software
