Patrol Men (2009 Salisbury, England) is a horror film, written and directed by David Campion and Ben Simpson and starring Chloe Van Harding, Andrew Mills, Jonathan Hansler, Leila Reid and Josh Golga. It is set on a fictitious Island. In true horror fashion, the Island has a flaw... Take The Wicker Man, add some of The Crazies, spread some Marxism, listen to some Jazz, read Animal Farm, and think about Paul Thomas Anderson, look at Danny Boyle’s manipulation of the digital medium, study Jack Nicholson’s madness in The Shining, check out American indie fashion, discover 60-70’s lost horror classics, take a B-movie plot, and direct it like a C-grade film. Patrol Men is the experimental, stupid, surreal, and heartfelt story that we must express at this age. Plot Peyton Island - located south of the British Isles. Population - very few. Nobody is allowed out after dark. The curfew is enforced by a gang of militants known only as the Patrol Men. When a rebellious teenager gets into trouble, Alex decides to question some of the Island's strict rules. Alex may only be fifteen, small, and naive, but she quickly realizes that she is the only one who can uncover the mystery of Peyton Island. Alex isn't in Wonderland anymore... Conception David Campion came up with the idea of Patrol Men shortly after completing his degree in Film & TV Production in Wiltshire College Salisbury. He approched long time friend and fellow film maker Ben Simpson about making a short film. After talking at lenght the two decided to make a feature instead as they felt that they had made many short films together and that they couldn't fully express themselves fully in the constraints of a short. It was during this time that they approched Niall Maher to be involved, Niall was still living in the area and Ben & David felt he would be a valuble addition to the group. The three young film makers sat down and fleshed out the ideas they had about the film, sticking mostly to Davids original idea they wanted to create an adventure movie inspired by the movies they loved in their youths. However Ben and David had always been horror fans even in their pre-teens so what had planned to be a adventure movie aimed at children and adults alike turned into a horror movie with intence political undertones and a dark humor. Production Production begain on Feb 18th '09 and finished on March 16th of the same year. Based in Laverstock, a small village outside Salisbury, Wiltshire the Team was expanded by the joining of Louis Corallo and Robert Cook, both of whom were eger to start work. Here is first week of shooting as summrised by Director David Campion in his blog: "MONDAY we started shooting. We used a clapper, even though we weren’t syncing sound. We shot most of the footage with a blue tint, ala Twilight. During the night we shot a scene with a disturbed man looking at pictures. There was an interesting picture of a vagina drawn by Marcus. We shot the scene, hand-held, with green lighting and an Italian horror soundtrack. Everybody got lost in the moment and we produced something special. We went to bed with smiles on our faces. TUESDAY was our first day working with outside people. I was scared. I’m pretty sure Ben was scared as well. We weren’t happy with the color of the blood we made, but it looked good. We decided not to use a tripod, because our tripod sucks. Plus, we wanted to try and give the scene energy. We’re not going out without a tripod again. We used a moving car for some amazing running shots. We then got a great silhouette shot from the top of a hill. Silhouettes + hills = nice shot. WEDNESDAY was the first fay with actors. We shot a nice scene on a nice beach. The beach was pebbly and the sea was a sound-related nightmare. Rob enjoyed filming a boat. We then got thrown out of an estate. Brilliant. We re-located and found a bridge. We all liked the bridge. Louis got hissed at by a swan. Swans are pure evil. THURSDAY was as good as Wednesday. We made a friend in Niall who stalks my estate with an air horn. We used a robotic zoom and all felt like we were embracing technology. The camera may put Rob out of the job. FRIDAY was cherryade day. The cherryade was tough, but Louis had fun with the sun. FUN and SUN both rhyme. We then shot something improvised. It was nice. We moved the camera around a lot. Niall dressed up as a Patrol Man and was unhappy with the make-up. He looked pretty scary. After shooting we watched THE WICKER MAN followed by the remake. The remake really sucks ass, like big style. I could complain for longer, but feel it has received enough critical hate. I can’t add anymore to it. SATURDAY was easy. We had two complaints from my estate. People don’t like helping struggling filmmakers. I can’t understand why. I was polite and the situations sorted themselves out. The scene was blocked with style and Louis seemed impressed. I like playing with shadows. We had a weekend off. I went to see MILK and DOUBT. I liked them both, but don’t believe Penn deserved an Oscar. Ben watched Benjamin Button and enjoyed it. Louis, Niall and Chloe went out in Salisbury. The night sounded like fun. We are currently watching THE 6TH DAY. It sucks. We were watching 90210. I haven’t watched it for a week or two and feel left out. We are discussing the naff DONNIE DARKO sequel. Niall is angry, because Louis bought him a Kinder egg. We are now discussing how much Steven Speilberg’s cinematographer makes a day. Louis reckons $150,000 a day. Niall doesn’t believe him. I don’t care."
