Passat Ltd. is a Canadian company specializing in the manufacturing, research and development of custom laser systems. It is best known for manufacturing equipment used on NASA's Phoenix Mars mission.
The company was founded in Toronto, Canada in July, 1995 and expanded to the United States in 2000. Their US location is in Owings Mills, Maryland. The president of Passat is Guerman Pasmanik.
Products
Passat produces compact turnkey nano and picosecond diode pumped solid-state lasers and related nonlinear optical components. When manufacturing laser systems, the company utilizes designs that exploit solid-state phase conjugation, pulse compression and stimulated Raman scattering.
Some applications of their UV picosecond lasers include machining and patterning materials, photo-mask repair, precise ranging, high resolution 3D imaging, and remote sensing, while their nanosecond lasers are used for MALDI mass spectrometer applications.
Passat Ltd. is a regular vendor for the US Air Force, the Canadian Space Agency and NASA. The company's 1 mJ, 100 Hz, 1064 nm laser was included on the robotic spacecraft, Phoenix, during NASA's Phoenix Mars Mission in 2008, which allowed discovery of ice drops in Martian atmosphere.
Passat lasers allowed to excite backward stimulated Brillouin/Raman scattering in air for the first time ever.
