Pacific Image Electronics Co., Ltd. is a leading developer of desktop film scanners. PIE was founded in September 1993, and specializes in digital imaging products and film scanners for consumer and professional photographers, the photographic laboratory industry and for biomedical applications. The company’s headquarters are located in Taipei, Taiwan (R.O.C.), and US division in Torrance, California, United States.
History
1993 - 2000
Pacific Image Electronics was among the first companies to understand that to get the best images from a silver halide film, a dedicated film scanner is a must. It became apparent that the image quality of a flatbed scanner with adapters normally suffers from the fact that there is a glass surface between the film and the scanning unit. In a film scanner, on the other hand, a linear light source projects the image through the film directly onto the imaging lens without any glass inbetween, resulting in a particularly sharp and colorful scanned image. In addition, this technology is much more light-efficient, meaning that the higher illumination enables a much faster scanning speed than a flatbed scanner with an adapter.
2000 - today
After 2000, PIE experienced a boom, as it was awarded many prices, starting with TechTV’s "Best of CES" in the Photography and Imaging category., an award recognizing the most outstanding new consumer technology products at the 2002 International CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. The film scanner PrimeFilm 3600PRO with 3600dpi optical resolution quickly became a hit, improving the status of film scanners by producing 17.8 million pixels (5100 x 3445) digital images, and gained on recognition as it was working under any Mac OS and Windows. Since 2000, Pacific Image Electronics bundles its scanners with Adobe Photoshop Elements and SilverFast Dust and Scratch removal software, and has obtained certification from ISO, UL, TUV, and CAS.
