P.S.A (an abbreviation for "Pot Steal alert" or "Pot steal attempt) is a term that has sprung out of the Wellington Pub Poker League circuit. It's popularity is growing as it becomes more and more obvious that P.S.A's are occuring all over the many tables that make up the league. The acryonym was originally coined by one Harry Jones, who is infamous for lame jokes and crass comments. The acronym has been as quoted as being "the best poker acronym ever invented" by such notables as Nicholas Van-Harleem, James Nelson and Dan Harrington.
The first expansion of the acronym, the pot steal alert, is normally called by a person on the table when he/she believes that there is a pot stealing procedure being performed by a fellow competitor. Criterion for calling a pot steal alert are as follows:
- Person raises 3x the big blind on the button. - Person raises 2x the big blind on the small blind. - Person constantly seems to raise strange amounts and normally completely over bets the pot. - Adam Jennings raised it
The second expansion of the acronym, the pot steal attempt, is basically when one attempts to steal a pot but fails miserably. Criterion for muttering "P.S.A failed" are as follows:
- 3x the big blind on the button w/ 27o, only to be reraised by the BB - Attempting to use late position as the be-all and end-all of poker play, with people eventually cottoning on and reraising you.
