The newest and latest job opportunity in India is becoming a surrogate mother for people all over the world. Outsourcing Surrogacy Outsourcing for which India has become renowned; poor Indian women are renting out their wombs to foreigners. Surrogate motherhood - carrying to term and giving birth to another woman's baby - once was limited in India to helping close relatives who could not complete a pregnancy due to medical difficulties. But leading gynecologist Dr. Kamla Selvaraj says it is now becoming a regular "profession" in India, with more and more women willing to carry babies for others, for a fee. India has for years been providing foreigners with in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment at a cheaper rate than the equivalent services in Western countries . Pricing In the United States, many women turn to in-vitro fertilization when having trouble conceiving. This can cost a couple up to the average cost of $12,400 for the entire in-vitro fertilization cycle . Surrogacy is another process that childless parents often try. In the United States this will cost the couple about $15,000 for payment to the surrogate mother as well as an additional charge of $30,000 for the agencies claim. In India, this whole process would only cost about $2,500 to $6,500 . For some in the United States, this process can reach up to $80,000 . Kaival Hospital Being a surrogate mother was legalized in India in 2002 . There is a place called Anand, India where a small clinic at Kaival Hospital matches infertile couples with local women, cares for the women during pregnancy and delivery, and counsels them afterward. At the Kaival Hospital, a team of maids, cooks, and doctors looks after the women, whose pregnancies would be unusual anywhere else, but are common here. More than fifty women in this city are now pregnant with the children of couples from the United States, Taiwan, Britain, and beyond. The women earn more than many would make in 15 years. But the program raises a host of uncomfortable questions that touch on morals and modern science, exploitation and globalization, and that most natural of desires: to have a family . See Also
