OurStage

OurStage is a music discovery site founded by Ben Campbell and Mark Ranalli, with the backing of Signature Capital, in October of 2006. The site opened to the public in April of 2007. It provides bands and musicians with the opportunity to gain exposure to both individual listeners as well as music industry representatives. Standings are determined through the use of a proprietary ranking system. OurStage claims that their voting system is immune from the irregularities that many other music voting sites experience, such as members of a band voting repeatedly for their own music. Listeners may also have an impact on a song’s standings by participating in the judging process.
Artists who receive high rankings on OurStage gain visibility and, it is hoped, support from established artists, industry professionals, and a broad assortment of partners, including AOL Music, Live Nation, Bonnaroo, Bumbershoot, Paste Magazine and many others.
OurStage operating model
Marketplace
The Marketplace is a resource where bands can proactively find and apply for gigs, and industry players can easily find, validate and book bands and artists for their live performance and music/film-related projects. Marketplace is currently in free-beta.
PartyLine
The PartyLine is a social media feature that enables fans and artists to create private chat rooms and invite friends to share streaming music, photos and videos from OurStage artists. The feature provides a way for artists to receive real-time feedback on songs and performances. Live video streams are also available through the service, giving artists the opportunity to perform live concerts.
Head2Head Judging
This is a proprietary, judging engine that puts two songs against one another, and allows users to select the one they prefer and by how much. OurStage claims that this system is "game-proof", i.e. that it avoids the possibility of users gaming the system in order to unfairly promote one song or band.
Sort4Judging
This is a judging engine that allows users to listen to four songs and rank them in order from best to worst. Sort 4, also available as a widget, provides fans with an alternative approach to vote for their favorite artists.
OurStage Hosts
Quinn Strassel and Alyssa Jayne Hale serve as the site's hosts and original content producers. They help OurStage members navigate the website and contribute original videos and blog posts. Winterband was censored by Ourstage and had their fan page removed because some other bands didn't like them because of their religious beliefs. Winterband had placed in various contests since 2007 and won the Nov 2008 Hard Rock Video category and came in 2nd in the finals.
