OSScamp

OSScamps is a community of around 1500 open source enthusiasts, across India, that organise regular unconferences, like BarCamp, on open source across India. The initiative to organize the first OSScamp was taken by Vineet Agrawal and Sonali Minocha in March 2007. Since then 12 OSScamps have been organised across India. Two upcoming OSScamps have been proposed.
Introduction
thumbOSScamp is a series of community-driven unconferences on open source organised regularly in India since March 2007. The community is 1500+ members strong in India.
Since March 2007, 12 OSScamps have been organised in India, by 6 local chapters of the community. OSSCube has been an active promoter of the camp since its inception. Kinshuk Sunil is one of the most active volunteers of the community, who plays an active role in the organisation of every camp. Most of the community artwork is contributed by Yadu Rajiv
The unconference is organised by local volunteers on a strictly to-cost basis. All expenses of the camp are met by sponsorships by the industry. The organisers do not make any discrimination against any technology.
The event was originally called "OSSCamp", but it was changed to "OSScamp" in June 2008. Due to its generic and pervasive nature, the community is claimed to be the biggest open source community in India, "not in numbers, but in spirit".
Objectives
The objectives of the community-driven unconference are three-fold:
* To create an open platform for discussing open source
* To promote indigenous open source development
* To promote implementation and adoption of open source
Format
The unconferences are conducted devoid of any scheduling, which has constantly drawn flak from some of the participants. Usually, sessions are registered/listed on the event website and time slots are decided on the spot at the event. The events usually see chaos on the event day with parallel sessions, social sandboxes, and unorganised sessions.
A talk is basically a presentation on any FOSS topic by one of the participants at the camp (called a camper).
The community has active presence in 6 Indian cities, with local residents organising an OSScamp frequently. They are mostly local events with participation from the city only, however campers from nearby cities join in as well.
Proposed Events
There are two upcoming events:
* , Jan 30 2010, Amity School of Engineering & Technology, Bijwasan, Delhi
* , Apr 10 2010, Chandigarh
