Orlow Smith

Orlow Smith (May 16, 1823 - March 19, 1868) was an American Union brigadier general during the period of the American Civil War. He received his appointment as dated to March 13, 1865.
Born in Geneseo, Illinois, Orlow Smith was an American Civil War officer from Ohio. On October 5, 1861, he enlisted into the army as a first lieutenant. He was promoted to captain the next month on November 25, 1861. Two years later, he was promoted to major on September 1863.
On November 29, 1864, Major Smith was wounded at the Battle of Spring Hill in south-central Tennessee by a musket-ball and taken from the field of battle. Command of the 65th Ohio Infantry regiment then fell to Captain Andrew Howenstine who was also wounded a few minutes later. Major Samuel L. Coulter of the 64th Ohio Infantry then took command of the 65th Ohio. Smith was also wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga and the Battle of Franklin.
When Smith died in 1868, his funeral was attended by over 1,200 people. He was buried at Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Ohio.
