OPSkins is an online marketplace for gaming virtual goods. OPSkins was created by Artur Minacov and John Brechisci Jr. in 2015 as an alternative to the Steam Community Market which is owned by the American video game developer, publisher and digital distribution company Valve. In 2018, Valve sent OPSkins a cease and desist letter to stop using Valve's intellectual property. The virtual goods market is estimated to reach $189 billion by 2025 due to the growing popularity of online gaming . The free-to-play game Fortnite generated over $1 billion in revenue across all platforms in 2018 entirely from in-game purchases which offer no competitive advantage to the game In January 2018, one esports fan purchased a rare sniper rifle skin for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on OPSkins for $61,052.63 marking the most expensive CS:GO transaction on public record. The skin was autographed by Tyler “Skadoodle” Latham from the esports organization Cloud9. In 2018, Valve sent OPSkins a cease and desist letter to stop using Valve's intellectual property. OPSkins launched an instant skin trading option to circumvent the seven day trade cooldown in CS:GO. However, Valve disabled all bots used by OPSkins, which led OPSkins to urge its users to withdraw any skins on the marketplace. That led to a loss of an estimated $1.9 million USD of CS:GO skins.
