Onetoronto.ca

onetoronto.ca is a City of Toronto based community initiative started in July of 2009 to help clean up the city. The website matches volunteers who want to help clean up "hot-spots" of litter in their neighbourhoods. Torontonians can also submit photos of these hotspots around the city and comment on different cleanup initiatives.
Creation
onetoronto.ca was created in July of 2009 and launched on July 14th 2009 with the help of Toronto Centre MPP George Smitherman. The website was created in response to the CUPE 79 and 416 strike which interrupted regular garbage service. The focus of the website has been on volunteers since inception, with all work being done by volunteers and most of the site’s content developed by residents of Toronto.
Purpose
The purpose of onetoronto.ca is to match up citizens from across the city who can help each other clean up their neighbourhoods, it was created to be a forum for citizens to show their love for their city and, as George Smitherman has said since the start, is not meant to be political in nature.
Work

The onetoronto.ca kick-off took place on July 14th 2009 in the neighbourhood of Yonge and Wellesley outside of the Wellesley TTC station. The second cleanup was the biggest to date (and was viewed as many to be the true "kick-off" as it recieved the most media coverage), taking place Saturday July 18th 2009 and involved public figures from across the city and political parties. The clean-up began at Yonge and Dundas Square and continued onto Broadview Avenue with city councillor Case Ootes and former leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario John Tory. The second stop took place at the intersection Eglinton and Keele street, with councillor Karen Stintz and MPP Laura Albanese. The third stop occurred around the neighbourhood of Church and Wellesley. Fourthly the volunteers cleaned around Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue with federal Liberal Party of Canada candidate for Trinity—Spadina Christine Innes, then off to Lawrence Avenue east with councillor Michael Thompson. The last stop on the Saturday clean-up was at the Finch ttc stop with MPP David Zimmer. The organization has since been involved throughout the city and has involved over 250 volunteers to date.
