The unprecedented enthusiasm and depth of grassroots support that some believe Barack Obama’s candidacy has generated, has spawned the word "Obamania". This vocal grassroots support has snowballed the Barack Obama campaign”, The excitement surrounding Barack Obama's candidacy has been reported in much of the world's media. The important debate surrounding the supposed phenomenon is whether Obamania is history or hysteria; “only a romantic would claim this is truly historic but only a cynic would dismiss it as insignificant” It has also been used to specifically refer to the European media coverage of the Barack Obama campaign. Obamania was parodied on the opening skit of return (after the 2007-08 writers strike ended) on February 23, 2008. Besides featuring an appearance by Obama Girl, the reporters on the show hosting an Obama/Hillary Clinton debate were portrayed as "Obama addicts", with one admitting that “The three of us are totally in the tank for Senator Obama." Hillary Clinton subsequently referred to the sketch and her perception of Obama's favorable media coverage in a speech to donors in Boston on Sunday, February 24 2008. See Also
