Nuclear research at Michigan Technological University

Michigan Technological University started a nuclear program in 1967, in response to the growing demand for nuclear engineers. A lot of the programs focus was on teaching engineers to operate a nuclear reactor. However, some research was done on the effects of radiation on living organisms, such as bugs and seeds. The nuclear department had some of the most top of the line equipment such as x-ray machines, a neutron howitzer, a lithium drifted germanium gamma ray spectrometer, a liquid scintillation counter, and a neutron generator. They also had lots of radiation sources including Cs 137, Cobalt 60, and an ultra-violet radiation source. They had a chapter of the American Nuclear Society that managed to send a group of students from Tech to a nuclear reactor in Chicago.
